When you need heavy equipment for a job, you want to rent the best. However, the wrong rental company can stick you with more problems than solutions. At Fredrickson, we’ve been in the business long enough to know what makes a good equipment rental company stand out from the bad.

Here are 5 red flags to look out for when shopping around for your next heavy equipment rental.

1. They don’t have any reviews.

Any equipment rental company should be able to provide you with a list of reviews you can read through if they’re not immediately apparent when you search the company. If they don’t have any reviews, either on Google, social media, or their website, there’s no way to verify their rental history.

Now, a newer company might not have accumulated any reviews yet, but this signals a lack of experience that could carry over into the quality of their service. You could ask what credentials qualify them to earn your business? Don’t be afraid to ask for reviews or references if you’re not sure.

2. Their reviews are mostly negative.

When you look at an equipment rental company’s reviews on their websites, directories, and social media sites, what do you notice? One or two negative reviews aren’t necessarily a concern, especially if the company has responded to those reviews in a helpful and thoughtful manner.

However, a page full of negative reviews with little to no responses from the equipment rental companies indicates a lack of care that’s not worth the risk.

3. They can’t show proof of insurance.

It’s vital that you choose equipment rental companies that have their own insurance. If your equipment rental company isn’t insured, you could be held liable for any accidents that occur during the equipment rental process.

Heavy equipment is an expensive investment, and you want to be sure you’re covered in case of an emergency. Otherwise, this could cost you a major sum of money which takes away from many other uses it would otherwise go towards.

4. They’re rude.

Don’t you want to do business with respectful, professional, and kind people? Then it’s important to choose an equipment rental company that’s easy and nice to communicate with. This minimizes the stress a job can create and reduces the potential for miscommunication leading to delays and other setbacks.

While one rude employee isn’t a reason to write off an entire company, if their customer service is lacking, on the whole, it signals a lack of professionalism. An equipment rental company that doesn’t deliver when talking to their customers might not deliver on their equipment, either.

5. They can’t answer your questions.

When you’re researching equipment rental companies, you should feel free to ask any questions you might have about the equipment. This could range from the cost of the equipment rental services to the brands that they use.

If a company doesn’t have the answers, it’s a red flag that they might not know what they’re doing. Never use an equipment rental company that can’t answer basic questions about the work they do on a regular basis.
